“Don’t Drink & Start A League!”: Heineken Trolls European Super League

A failed bid to start a breakaway European football league has drawn criticism from a headline sponsor of the UEFA Champions League, with witty social creative.

With news emerging yesterday that at least half of the 12 football teams across Britain and Europe had backflipped on their decision to join the European Super League, Heineken released creative online that argues for football unity across the continent.

Since 1994, the beer brand has been a proud sponsor of the UEFA Champions League, a league that would have been directly affected had the European Super League gathered any steam.

Under the caption, #BetterTogether, the image shared across social media reads:

“Don’t drink & start a league. Enjoy Heineken responsibly.”

Beneath this, Heineken has a message showing its allegiance to the UEFA Champions League.

All six English Premier League clubs that said they would join the European Super League have confirmed their intention to pull out of the proposed project, leaving just six sides from across Europe still involved.

This came just two days after the concept of a breakaway league for the biggest clubs across Europe and Britain was announced, a move swiftly criticised by fans at online and in-person protests, footballers, coaches, clubs and politicians.
